C. H. Guenther

Parallel partnered with C.H. Guenther on a multi-year effort that modernized and aligned its iconic Pioneer Brand packaging. We embraced the challenge of elevating shelf appeal and functionality for new consumers while respecting the brand’s 150-year heritage. Early research highlighted the need for cohesive messaging, more distinctive and consistent product photography, a refreshed color system (anchored in the Pioneer Blue from its earliest 19th-century packaging), and the opportunity to clarify how the brand communicates comfort and ease across categories.

After auditing brand elements common to Pioneer’s core product families, we developed design concepts for each vertical, including gravies, seasonings, baking mixes, flours, and cornmeals, then tested our initial work with consumers. Our approach introduced a contemporary design language that maintained a respectful nod to the past, featuring photorealistic detailing, a prominent “Comfort Food Made Easy” ribbon device, and blue-accented photography. 

As Svetlana Markova, Vice President of Marketing at CHG, shared: “Packaging is often the first way we connect with consumers—and for Pioneer Brand, we wanted that connection to feel grounded in trust, warmth and approachability. This new look captures the brand’s spirit of keeping comfort close—right in the pantry.”

The comprehensive system included a suite of fully designed prototypes, detailed packaging architecture documentation, and new brand elements aligned and applied across all tiers of packaging. Parallel also art-directed dozens of new product photographs with longtime collaborator Pauline Stevens and her team of cooks, pastry chefs, and food stylists, supervised prepress during print and manufacturing, and proposed full rollout communication strategies. The redesign strengthened brand recognition, clarified product benefits, aligned previously disparate packaging lines, and delivered a cleaner, more intuitive system, demonstrating Parallel’s ability to lead complex, multi-category brand modernizations while positioning Pioneer for future growth.
